Apart from a tank, sand, rock, lights. filters, skimmers and fish... The next if not the most important item on your list is Reverse Osmosis Water, more
commonly called “R.O” for your tank, which raises the question “Why Do I need RO water ?”
The simple answer is that normal tap water on its own contains minute traces of many chemicals and trace elements that could and probably will
have an adverse effect on the health of the inhabitants of your tank - fish or otherwise.
The likelihood of your Marine fish encountering some of the chemical additives added by the local Water Company are probably zero, for instance
Chlorine, Fluoride, possibly trace amounts of copper (which is highly toxic and is usually deadly to your corals and inverts)
Also tap water usually has low level amounts of nitrates and phosphates - these two alone are all nutrients that nuisance algae need to survive - add other
dissolved solids and you have a unique cocktail for problems - so it makes sense to eliminate these “nasties” beforehand and give your inhabitants the best
possible chance of a stress free life.
So what are the options? the easiest is to buy ready made RO water.
We have been producing RO onsite for many years and usually have a plentiful supply available to save you the trouble of making your own, just bring
your own container and one of the staff will happily fill it for you.
Secondly, you make your own... all this requires is an RO Filter system and some very basic plumbing skills and you have your own
plentiful supply - we have many systems available starting at £69.99 upwards.
So now you have your RO water it will need one vital ingredient... Salt.. - we have that base covered as well, we also sell RO water
with a high quality salt premixed to take some of the hard work out of your water changes.
